Mario Balotelli will go down in history as one of football's greatest mavericks.

The Italian forward has previously done what he likes - both on and off the pitch - without thought for any repercussions.

He has matured a little in the past few years but Balotelli remains a divisive figure.

In recent years, Balotelli has fallen out of the public eye a little and now plies his trade in France.

After a period at Nice which started successfully but ended on a sour note, the Italian striker moved to Marseille in January.

He has rediscovered his scoring form at his new club, hitting the back of the net eight times in his 12 games.

'Super Mario' likely played his last game for the club on Friday night and he finished his spell in typical fashion.

The 28-year-old was sent on in the 59th minute but received his marching orders with three minutes remaining.

Balotelli decided to make a rash challenge from behind on Daniel Congre and was deservedly given a red card.

Typical Mario.

Despite being a striker, that is now the 12th red card Balotelli has been given in his career.

He has now been been sent off for six different sides.

He's been sent off once for AC Milan, Inter Milan, Italy and Marseille, while he has also been given four red cards each for Manchester City and Nice.

As Balotelli once famously said: 'Why always me?'

Despite his red, Marseille managed to hold on for a 1-0 victory and finished Ligue 1 in fifth.

As for Balotelli, his contract runs out in the summer and it is unknown whether he will extend his stay.

Where ever he goes, though, he's expected to bring along a lot of entertainment, both on and off the pitch.
