Valencia win the Copa del Rey with 2-1 victory over Barcelona

Barcelona v Valencia - Spanish Copa del Rey Final

Barcelona's season has ended in disappointment following a 2-1 defeat to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

It wasn't long ago that the Blaugrana had dreams of winning the treble.

But those dreams were crushed when they lost to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final, and that has been followed up with another poor defeat to Valencia.

Lionel Messi admitted before the match that it was a struggle for him and his Barcelona teammates to get over the stunning defeat to Liverpool.

"[The Liverpool game] was a really hard blow that we received; for me and the rest of the players," Messi said, per Marca.

"It was hard to get back up. It was a really hard blow.”

Quite a startling admission for the Barcelona captain to admit ahead of a cup final.

But Messi’s point seemed very apparent in Seville on Saturday evening.

The Argentinian and his teammates produced an uninspiring opening 45 minutes, conceding twice against Marcelino’s side.

Barcelona v Valencia - Spanish Copa del Rey Final

When the two sides met in La Liga in February, Valencia raced into a 2-0 lead before Messi rescued Barcelona with two goals.

And the 31-year-old did manage to get Barcelona back into the game but it wasn't enough as Valencia held on for the win.

Barcelona fell 2-0 down in the first half through goals from Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo.

Gameiro gave Valencia the lead in the 21st minute when he fired home following a neat team move.

And it was 2-0 12 minutes later, Rodrigo turning Carlos Soler’s cross home from close range.

Valencia fully deserved their lead, and it was an advantage they would hold as they lifted the Copa del Rey trophy for the eighth time in their history.

Messi tried his hardest to get Barcelona back into the game, coming very close to scoring one of the finest goals of his career.

But he could only watch on as his outside-of-the-foot effort crashed against the post.

His efforts eventually paid off when he reacted quickest at a corner to score in the 73rd minute.

So the season ends with just the La Liga trophy for Barcelona.

What once looked like being a memorable season has ended very disappointingly.
