Manchester United celebrated the 20th anniversary of their famous 1999 treble win by hosting a Bayern Munich legends side at Old Trafford last May.On May 26, 1999, the Red Devils, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, completed the treble by winning the Champions League in dramatic circumstances. They trailed 1-0 after Mario Basler scored in the sixth minute before Fergie decided to introduce Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And the two strikers would etch their name into Man United folklore by each scoring in injury-time.“Football, eh? Bloody hell,” remarked Ferguson at full-time.

The Scot was in attendance as a Man United team filled with former stars faced off against Bayern Munich.

Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Andy Cole all started the match.

David Beckham put on a show

Solskjaer came on for Cole in the first minute of the match and the now Man United manager scored the opening goal, firing home from close range.

Those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed watching the club legends - especially given what they’ve been used to watching this season - in particular, Beckham.

It took just three minutes for the Beckham to remind everyone of his abilities, pinging passes about like it was 2001 again.

That technique from Beckham. Poetry in motion.

Beckham's passing was on point

And he scored a goal

Every step that Beckham took was met with cheers, with journalist Samuel Luckhurst writing on Twitter: “Not an overstatement to say David Beckham has been the worthiest number seven at Old Trafford since Ronaldo left 10 years ago.

“Still gets the reverential ovations by the corner flag like he used to. Easily forgotten what a world-class footballer he was.”

What Man United would give to have prime Becks back in their team today.

It wasn’t just Beckham who was turning heads in the legends match.

“Jaap Stam not far behind Beckham this afternoon,” Luckhurst added.

“Still amazes me United didn't do more to get Sol Campbell in 2001. If they'd paired him with Stam #mufc would probably have won three more leagues on the trot.”
