Football fans were not treated to a showdown between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo this season. For years, the two went head-to-head at least twice a season when Barcelona faced Real Madrid. But Ronaldo’s move to Juventus last summer brought an end to that rivalry. The only possible meeting would have come in the Champions League but Ronaldo’s Juventus were knocked out before a clash against Barcelona could come to fruition.Hopefully next year we get to see Ronaldo v Messi again.

Both players won domestic titles this year, Ronaldo winning Serie A and Messi claiming La Liga.

But the Argentinian will have expected more from a campaign which saw Barcelona throw away a glorious opportunity to win the treble.

Ronaldo accomplishments Messi 'will never achieve'

Not that Ronaldo fans are complaining, of course.

And one has highlighted every accomplishment that the Portuguese star has managed that Messi ‘will never achieve’.

The Twitter thread, created by MadridistaHaven, includes accomplishments such as winning the Champions League with two different teams, being the top scorer in the Champions League for six consecutive seasons and scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup.

Win the Champions League for 3 consecutive seasons

Score a World Cup hat-trick

First player to win every trophy and every individual honor for two different clubs

Some of those accomplishments depend entirely on Messi leaving Barcelona, so it’s not really fair to knock him for those.

And others, such as winning an international trophy with his country, certainly aren’t impossible.

Indeed, Messi will feature in the Copa America with Argentina this summer.

The 31-year-old has appeared in four finals with his country, losing every one.

He briefly retired from international football following Argentina’s defeat to Chile in the 2016 Copa America final, saying: “I’ve done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion."

You get the sense that this year’s tournament, hosted in Brazil, could well be Messi’s final one if Argentina fail to win it. For definite, this time.

As for Ronaldo, he made up for Portugal’s defeat in the Euro 2004 final by winning the tournament in 2016.
