Lewis Hamilton got the ultimate payback on Mercedes' chief strategist James Vowles following his thrilling victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. The Brit was forced to put on one of the most controlled displays of his life as his Mercedes car sported medium tyres rather than the hard tyres used by the chasing pack.He was clearly unhappy about the decision mid-way through the race as he told the team radio "we're going to lose this race," but kept his nerve to fly past the checkered flag first for the 77th time in his glittering career. After the race, Vowles told cameras that hard tyres would have seen "the same result with less stress" and admitted Mercedes wanted to "add a bit of excitement."Hamilton's return was eagerly anticipated, though, and Vowles expected a "fun" talk with the world champion where he was willing to admit the team got the tyre situation wrong.

The 34-year-old offered a bit more than a "fun" chat, though, charging into the team's room with a bottle of champagne and unleashing fury onto Volkes and the rest of the representatives.

His reasoning was made very clear when he shouted: "That's for putting me on medium tyres for 68 laps!"

It was met by hysterical laughter, though, and amongst all of the fun and games, Hamilton and his team knew they had extended their lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship to seven points.

Sebastian Vettel, second on the day, trailed Hamilton's 25 points on 18, whilst Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was pushed up to third on 15 points following Max Verstappen's five-second penalty.

A hectic day in the Formula 1 season reached a hectic end and Hamilton will be aiming to strengthen his position at the table summit at Canada's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in two weeks.

It's unlikely Mercedes will be making the same mistake after this, though...
