What does Taylor Swift's apartment and six millennia-worth of ice cream have in common? They're both things you can buy for around £35 million.

On the other hand, you could spend it all on Alexis Sanchez and watch in bewilderment as he flops at Manchester United in a transfer that promised so much.

It seems amusing to recall the infamous video of Sanchez playing the piano at Old Trafford and in truth, the Chilean winger has been off-key ever since.

Fans could put his difficult first season down to settling in at the club, but Sanchez has actually managed to play even worse this time around and supporters are starting to lose patience.

The Sanchez that terrorised defences with Barcelona and Arsenal seems to have hung up his boots and United have been left with the shell of a formerly world-class player.

Sanchez's crazy wages

It's a sorry state of affairs when people are noticing that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that scored the same amount of goals at Old Trafford as him this season.

Above everything else, though, it's Sanchez's wages that make the situation all the more baffling, with the struggling forward bagging £500,000-a-week including bonuses.

Not only is that completely unrepresentative of his current performances, but it has led players like David de Gea and Paul Pogba to request parity and that's easier said than done.

Comparison to Liverpool forwards

So, how much has Sanchez actually managed to pocket? Well, it has now been 70 weeks since he played the piano and that means an incomprehensible answer of £35 million.

You read that right and when you start comparing that to similar transfer fees, the situation becomes all the more laughable, particularly if you happen to support Liverpool.

It means that we're just a few weeks away from seeing United spend more on Sanchez's wages than Liverpool did to sign Mohamed Salah for approximately £37 million last year.

So, yes, that also means United are spending more on the Chilean than Liverpool paid for Roberto Firmino (£29 million) and the in-form Sadio Mane (£34 million).

We're not finished there and while football economics have changed a lot in seven years, it also eclipses the £32 million that Chelsea needed to get their hands on Eden Hazard.

We don't need to spell out the disparity between the relevant statistics and it has been suggested that Untied are willing to pay millions of pounds to shuffle him out of the club.

From a money standpoint, the only saving grace is that Sanchez hasn't been hitting any of his targets and tearing into a United wallet that is spilling plenty of notes on him.

United will take the whole situation as a lesson learned, but it goes to show that Liverpool are beating them both on the pitch and in the boardroom right now.
