Sheffield Wednesday wasted no time in making their mark in the January transfer market by signing two players in the first week of the window with the expectation of more to follow.

Defenders Reda Johnson and Michael Morrison moved to Hillsborough from Plymouth and Leicester respectively and while both will be expected to help the Owls achieve this season’s aim of promotion back to the Championship, it is clear that the moves have been made with the future of the club also in mind.

Both players are 22-years-old and with Wednesday having tied them to three-and-half-year deals at the club it is clear that the moves have been made with the long-term future in mind as both players should have their best years in the sport ahead of them. Hopefully these will come at Hillsborough.

New Chairman Milan Mandaric has outlined that the club hopes to bring in at least six new faces during the month and Wednesday fans will be relieved and excited by this prospect.

For many years previously the prospect of the transfer windows has meant a battle to hold onto the clubs best players while scratching around for whoever may be available to take on loan with a restricted wage budget.

With Mandaric now at the helm having wiped out a huge chunk of the club’s debts Wednesday are in the market for players that will strengthen the squad in the short term as they bid for an instant return to the second tier.

At the same time, the new signings will hopefully hold the club in good stead for years to come as they plan for future success.
