Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The French legend was elected back in 2007 up until 2015, but he was then banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee.

Mediapart report that Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning as part of the investigation by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police into the rigging of votes to award Qatar the upcoming World Cup.

The 63-year-old is being held at a police station in Nanterres, a suburb in the French capital city of Paris.

Qatar were awarded the World Cup back in 2010 and controversy has surrounded the decision ever since.

This also isn't the first time Platini has been involved in a corruption scandal - far from it.

Both Platini and Sepp Blatter were banned for eight years from all football-related activity for ethics violations.

And last year, Platini controversially revealed that the 1998 World Cup was fixed so that France and Brazil could only meet in the final.

"France-Brazil in the final, it was the dream of everyone," Platini told radio station France Bleu Sport per Telegraph.

He laughingly added: "There was a little trickery. We did not spend six years organising the World Cup to not do some little shenanigans. Do you think other World Cup hosts did not?"
