Liverpool are plotting a shock move for James Milner, according to The Sun.

Milner has failed to make a lasting impression at Manchester City since his £26 million summer move from Aston Villa; contributing just one goal in 28 appearances this season.

Liverpool are now reportedly considering offering the 25-year-old a fresh start in their pursuit of January reinforcements.

However, the likelihood of City selling Milner remains incredibly slim so the best Liverpool could hope would be to take the England international on loan for the remainder of the season.

Milner is one of several attacking players to have been linked with a move to Liverpool during the transfer window as they continue their search for more potent goalscoring threats.

Liverpool have looked toothless in the final third at times this season and would benefit from the invention of a player of Milner's calibre.

Milner's former teammate at Villa, Ashley Young, has also been tipped to move to Liverpool as has Saint-Etienne winger Dimitri Payet.
