Romelu Lukaku is on the verge of completing his £74 million move from Manchester United to Inter Milan.

The Belgian striker, who turned 26 in May, arrived in Milan on Wednesday night and is expected to finalise his transfer over the coming hours.

Lukaku was fined by United after missing training on Tuesday. He has been maintaining his fitness levels with former club Anderlecht in recent days.

United rejected a £54 million bid from Inter last month, but the Italian giants have now agreed to meet the Red Devils’ asking price.

Juventus were interested in signing the former Everton centre-forward; however, the swap deal with Paulo Dybala failed to materialise due to financial reasons.

Inter was reportedly Lukaku’s preferred destination. He will work under Antonio Conte, who wanted to bring the striker back to Stamford Bridge during his time as Chelsea manager.

Lukaku scored 42 goals in 96 games for United but failed to convince many supporters.

His first touch, in particular, led to heavy criticism from the Old Trafford faithful.

Former Man Utd captain Gary Neville, however, was critical of Lukaku’s fitness.

During United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea towards the end of last season, Neville laughed on commentary because Lukaku looked knackered in the 27th minute.

“I genuinely think it’s a fitness issue,” Neville said, sounding amused. “Look at him on the edge of the box now - he’s knackered!

“Hands on the hips [laughs].”

And now, following the news of Lukaku’s departure, Neville hasn’t held back on Twitter.

When journalist Andy Mitten wished Lukaku well for the future, Neville replied criticising the player’s fitness and professionalism.

“Andy he admitted he was overweight ! He is over 100kg! He’s a Manchester United player!” the Sky Sports pundit replied.

“He will score goals and do well at Inter Milan but unprofessionalism is contagious 😷 ! 👋“

‘Unprofessionalism is contagious’. Strong words there from Neville.

And worrying words for Inter.

Neville clearly feels that Lukaku is a bad influence on his teammates.

Having said that, it’s hard to imagine Lukaku getting away with anything unprofessional under Conte.

Conte is a disciplinarian who will expect maximum effort from his main striker both in training and during matches.
