Yes, you really did read the headline correctly. In a bizarre transfer that gathered momentum out of seemingly nothing, Arsenal have today confirmed the signing of David Luiz from London rivals Chelsea. It emerged in the French media that Luiz had skipped training in order to facilitate a move to the Emirates Stadium, which the English press corroborated just hours earlier.Luiz has been linked with a move to Arsenal before, but having gone an entire summer without those familiar rumours, the whole deal seems to have transpired in the last 24 hours.Arsenal fans had been begging for a new centre-back all summer long, but their decision to buy the Brazilian - albeit for a minimal transfer fee - has certainly raised eyebrows across social media.

For starters, Luiz isn't exactly a spring chicken and at 32 years old, Arsenal haven't exactly bought themselves a long-term option like recent moves Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk.

That's in addition to the fact that Luiz has a reputation for being inconsistent and mistake-prone, which are the same two tropes for which Shkodran Mustafi has been so widely criticised.

Luiz has actually worked with Unai Emery before, but their brief collaboration at Paris Saint-Germain was ended by a departure that the current Arsenal boss was never a fan of.

As a result, fans will keep their fingers crossed that they see a calmer Luiz in north London this season and that his experience rubs off on Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

But what does this all mean for Chelsea? The situation is incredibly bizarre when you consider that Luiz was given a two-year contract in May and it has done little to help them hoard further funds.

Plus, the transfer-banned Blues aren't exactly swimming in centre-back options and only the trio of Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma have senior experience in the team.

Admittedly, it could give Frank Lampard the chance to blood youth into the side and Chelsea fans were certainly getting fed up with Luiz, but the situation isn't exactly ideal.

One way or another, though, it has allowed Arsenal to finally buy a centre-back that will be able to play for them during the 2019-20 season.

In a surprisingly busy window for the Gunners, they had already secured the signings of Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Dani Ceballos and even the £72 million Nicolas Pepe.

As for Luiz, while the transfer fee itself isn't exactly costly, only time will tell how much his performances could be.
