Premier League clubs spent over £1.4 billion during this summer's transfer window. While that total finished narrowly short of the spending record from 2017, it was still a remarkable few months of transfers that saw the inflation of fees go through the roof.Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender in history with his move to Manchester United and Joao Cancelo followed him as the costliest full-back after switching to Manchester City.Meanwhile, Arsenal obliterated their transfer record with the purchase of Nicolas Pepe from Lille for £72 million, while also purchasing players like Kieran Tierney and David Luiz.Even Tottenham, who didn't spend a single penny in last summer's window, were seen flaunting the cash and broke their own record to capture Tanguy Ndombele for over £60 million.

Crazy Premier League transfers

Newly-promoted Aston Villa found a way to spend over £100 million, Leicester City made Ayoze Perez a £30 million player and Chelsea even defied their transfer ban to sign Mateo Kovacic.

The moral of the story is that it was a busy summer in the Premier League and one that provides a fascinating shuffle of the pack in terms of all-time spending since 1992.

It may come as a surprise to hear that Chelsea, as opposed to Manchester City, have spent the most money of any club in the competition's 27-year history.

The evolution of Premier League spending

Their eye-watering tally of £1.7 billion includes hefty purchases for the likes of Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Pulisic.

However, one thing that's more interesting than listing the all-time biggest Premier League spenders, is by looking at how the list has changed every season.

Well, look no further than a live graphic that has been drawn up by Coral, mapping the league's cumulative highest spenders since 1992. It's truly fascinating, so check it out below:

For the opening two seasons, it was Blackburn Rovers who led the way with their heavy spending under Jack Walker, only for Newcastle United to usurp them halfway through the 1990s.

The Magpies would continue to be England's biggest spenders for almost a decade, with their headline purchase coming in 1996 when they paid a world-record fee for Alan Shearer.

However, just as Manchester United were about to take the lead, Roman Abramovich changes everything and his interminable cash quickly propelled Chelsea to top spot.

The Blues have maintained the title as the biggest cumulative spenders ever since, while City have sensationally risen from 12th to second in the 16 years that followed.

It's certainly interesting to see how spending in the Premier League has changed over the years and we can now expect the transfer-banned Chelsea to lose their monetary title imminently.
