Liverpool started their Premier League season like a house on fire with a straightforward 4-1 win over Norwich City on Friday night. The Anfield faithful were treated to quite a show in the first half with Jurgen Klopp’s side running riot as the newly promoted Canaries were brought back down to earth with a rather solemn bump.Liverpool were simply too powerful for their lesser fancied opponents and it showed, especially when Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner without bothering to leave the ground.Divock Origi and Mohamed Salah provided the other goals after a seventh minute Grant Hanley own goal had set last season’s runner-up off and running. It was pretty much business as usual for the Reds then, who continued their rollicking good form at home by extending their unbeaten run to a staggering 41 games.

In fact, you would be forgiven for thinking there had been no break at all, especially when Trent Alexander-Arnold floated in a quite sumptuous assist for Origi to nod home.

Alexander-Arnold broke the Premier League record for assists by a defender last season (13) and last night picked up right where he left off.

However, last night’s assist saw the young full-back pull off another quite impressive feat by becoming the first player to register an assist in five consecutive league games since Mesut Ozil in 2015.

He is also now one of only eight players in the history of the Premier League to have pulled it off.

It’s worth noting that the Englishman is not yet 21 - and is a defender.

While the likes of Ozil breaking assist records is somewhat expected, a young fullback probably wouldn’t be your first pick to be claiming all the records for himself.

Be prepared to see a few more of those vicious, swerving crosses coming in from the Liverpool right flank as the season goes on.

Otherwise, it was pretty smooth sailing for the Merseysiders but a bizarre injury to goalkeeper Alisson Becker may have had Klopp tossing and turning in the night.

Either way, Liverpool are top of the league - only 37 games to go.
