The Premier League title race went right down to the wire last season.

Manchester City’s unrelenting ding-dong battle with Liverpool made for compelling viewing as both sides pressed for domestic glory.

In the end it was the Manchester side who were crowned the finest side in the land, pipping the Merseysiders to the post by a solitary point.

Having lost just one game all season, finishing second would have hurt Jurgen Klopp and his team.

They were so close to finally ending their painful title drought but in the end a staggering haul of 97 wasn’t even enough.

Now, they have the chance to go again and, having clinched continental glory in Madrid in June, their focus will be firmly on securing the holy grail that is the Premier League.

City won’t simply hand their title over though, and many pundits are predicting Guardiola’s side to once again dominate on the domestic front.

Few experts are expecting Liverpool to go one better than they did last season after a quiet summer in the transfer market.

However, former England striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has given Kopites some hope after revealing his predictions for the newly started season.

The BT Sport pundit believes Liverpool will finally overhaul City this season to lift the trophy every Liverpool fan has craved for so long.

Speaking to talkSport Lineker felt that while the injury to Alisson could be telling, City won’t be able to lift themselves to a third title tilt in a row.

“I think it will be very tight between the two.

“Before yesterday I was saying Liverpool and I shouldn’t be put off by the fact they won 4-1.

“You can’t change. I think it’s really hard to do it and lift yourself for three seasons on the bounce, which has proved to be the case in the Premier League.

“Pep Guardiola has shown that he just wins leagues year in and year out. I wouldn’t put it past him, but let’s go Liverpool.”

So Lineker is one of the few experts backing the Anfield side but he could have a point.

After their 4-1 drubbing of Norwich City in the opening game of the season, the Reds certainly look up for the fight.

Maybe it finally is Liverpool’s year.
