Manchester United made the perfect start to the Premier League season on Sunday afternoon.

While many pundits and supporters were predicting them to miss out on the top four, the Red Devils made a pretty strong counterargument against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjar led his team to a thumping 4-0 victory over Chelsea who, managed by the similarly emotionally-connected Frank Lampard, fielded a youthful side for the opening weekend.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 18 minutes, while Chelsea threatened to find the net through Tammy Abraham and Emerson Palmieri.

And it continued to be a tightly-fought contest until Anthony Martial, having freshly returned to the number 9 jersey, bundled the ball home from close range to double United's advantage.

Man Utd 4-0 Chelsea

The floodgates opened from there with Rashford scoring from a brilliant Paul Pogba pass, before Daniel James wrapped up proceedings with a dream goal on his debut.

However, between both of those goals, a certain Scott McTominay pricked up the ears of United fans with a show of his elite mentality.

The previously maligned Scot finished last season in fine form and aside from shining again with his technique during the Chelsea win, McTominay also showed his potential as a future captain.

McTominay shouts: 'We go again!'

With the United squad celebrating Rashford putting United 3-0 up, most of the players could be forgiven for feeling relaxed at having wrapped up the three points.

Nevertheless, before everybody returned for the kick-off, McTominay made a point of shouting 'We go again' during the huddle to encourage his team to bag a fourth goal.

The rousing comment, albeit brief, went down an absolute treat with United fans on social media and the full clip can be seen here:

There's a future United captain if ever we've seen one.

While none of the United players were exactly ready to down tools and cruise to full-time, the 22-year-old was determined to make sure his teammates didn't drop an ounce of energy.

And that very philosophy will be key if Solskjaer's men are to build on the success of the Chelsea win and maintain their form in upcoming games with Wolves and Crystal Palace.

You can understood the supporters for getting excited, but it will be picking up three points week in, week out against the lower teams, as opposed to anomalous thrashings, that will drive success.

However, we'd be lying if we said that the performances of players like Rashford and Harry Maguire weren't indicative of a team destined to challenge for the top four places.
