Frank Lampard hits back at Jose Mourinho over team selection vs Manchester United

Manchester United v Chelsea FC - Premier League

Frank Lampard's Premier League managerial career got off to the worst possible start at Old Trafford.

Chelsea were hit for four without reply against a resurgent Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from the spot before he doubled his tally in the second half, Anthony Martial and Daniel James joining him on the scoresheet.

Strangely, though, given the scoreline, there were still positive to be taken. Chelsea had more possession, more shots and indeed more shots on target.

So what went wrong? It all fell apart under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho, who was working as a pundit in the Sky Sports studio and he felt Lampard's side lacked experience.

"My feeling is that today they had a possibility to play with more know-how," the Portuguese is quoted by the Mail.

Lampard responds

"So these are the players that we played today, the players that were on the bench in a game that we were clearly the better team for 45, maybe 60 minutes. What was evident was that we made individual errors that led to four goals out of their five shots.

"So there's the harsh reality for us. And I don't have to be too concerned about what anyone else says, the pundits, but what is clear is the squad is the squad we've got and I believe in it."

It hasn't taken long for the pair to be at loggerheads. It's also worth remembering that Lampard's first summer has been blighted by a transfer ban - hence the youngsters.

Things don't get much easier for the new man in charge either, with Liverpool up next in the Super Cup.

Was Lampard's XI too inexperienced? Have your say in the comments.
