Real Madrid’s pre-season has been inauspicious to say the least.Big things are expected from Los Blancos this season after they spent close to £300 million on new signings.Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo all arrived at the Bernabeu for big fees this summer, as Zinedine Zidane revamped his squad following a hugely disappointing 2018/19 campaign. However, Madrid’s pre-season performances have been concerning to say the least. They’ve suffered defeats against Bayern Munich (3-1), Atletico Madrid (7-3!), Tottenham (1-0) and only managed to beat Arsenal (on penalties), Fenerbahce (5-3) and Red Bull Salzburg (1-0).

They ended their pre-season campaign with another defeat on Sunday, losing on penalties to AS Roma following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Marcelo and Casemiro put the Spanish giants ahead twice in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico but Diego Perotti and Eden Dzeko responded with two equalisers.

Marcelo missed the final spot-kick in the shoot-out, which meant another defeat for Zidane’s men.

Subsequently, they missed out on one of the strangest trophies we’ve ever seen.

In fact, it’s probably *the* strangest trophy we’ve ever seen.

Madrid and Roma were battling it out for the Mabel Green Cup - which, as you can see, is literally a tree.

Real Madrid’s trophy museum at the Bernabeu is already rammed but it’s a pity they weren’t able to add the Mabel Green Cup to their collection.

It will now sit proudly in Roma's trophy cabinet - if it will fit.

Despite Madrid’s concerning pre-season, Zidane insists his team are ready for the start of the new La Liga campaign, which gets underway on Saturday.

“The key thing is what we've managed so far,” he told reporters, per Madrid's official website. “Pre-season is over and next week we start out in the league. We're ready for crucial games and to get going in La Liga.”

Madrid travel to Celta Vigo in their La Liga opener on Saturday.
