Harry Maguire enjoyed a flawless debut for Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. The England international, who became the most expensive defender of all time after completing his £80 million move from Leicester City earlier this month, was outstanding in United’s 4-0 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford.Maguire was named Man of the Match after producing a brilliant defensive performance and helping United keep a clean sheet in the process. The 26-year-old made more clearances (seven) and more interceptions (four) than any other player on the pitch. He also had a pass accuracy of 86 per cent, made two blocks, committed zero goals and wasn’t dribbled past.

Prior to kick-off, SkyBet enticed punters with a ‘boosted’ offer: 6/1 (from 3/1) for Marcus Rashford to have two or more shots on target and Maguire to make two or more tackles.

Rashford did his part, scoring two goals, but bettors who lumped on were dismayed and baffled to read that SkyBet didn’t credit Maguire with a single completed tackle over the course of the 90 minutes.

Instead of making a profit, they’d actually lost their money.

Many people who lumped on subsequently took to Twitter to ask SkyBet what the hell was going on.

Some of them even posted video clips of Maguire making ‘tackles’ during the Chelsea match.

Here are three examples…

However, SkyBet refused to back down, telling their angry customers: “Unfortunately, officially Maguire has 0 tackles. He is credited with 7 clearances and 4 interceptions. Sorry for any inconvenience of this.”

Their rules - per Opta - define a tackle as “where a player connects with the ball in a ground challenge where he successfully takes the ball away from the player in possession.

“The tackled player must clearly be in possession of the ball before the tackle is made.

“It is not a tackle, when a player cuts out a pass by any means.”

SkyBet rely on stats from Opta, who did not deem any of the examples posted above to be classed as ‘tackles’.
