We’re no closer to knowing where Neymar will be playing this season.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has been at the centre of a tug of war between his current employers, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

PSG are understandably desperate to keep hold of their star man and knocked back huge bids from the two La Liga giants.

According to Spanish football expert Guillem Ballague, Barca bid £100 million plus Philippe Coutinho, while Los Blancos’ offer included James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale.

The most expensive player in history is always going to be difficult to prise away, though.

Real Madrid and Barcelona boast the resources to continue pestering PSG - especially with Neymar reportedly keen on sealing a move back to Spain.

But in the background of all this, there’s been a significant update on the foot injury the 27-year-old sustained in June.

According to Le Parisien, via AS, PSG have consulted several experts for clarification on the extent of Neymar’s issue, which they now describe as a ‘permanent concern’.

The club medical staff fear the treatment Neymar has received in Brazil isn’t ‘thorough enough’ and could be the reason his metatarsal remains unhealed and prone to further damage.

Last month, specialists told Barcelona that a bone graft might be the only way to cure the suspected pseudoarthrosis (meaning the wound hasn’t healed properly) in the player’s affected toe.

These reports are hugely concerning given the amount of football Neymar has missed as a result of his foot problem during the last 18 months.

The first instance occurred in February 2018, which ruled him out for virtually the remainder of the season and cast serious doubt over his participation at the World Cup.

After leading Brazil to the quarter-finals in Russia, Neymar’s toe held up until January when another break forced him to spend four months on the sidelines.

Then just over six weeks after his recovery, he fractured the same bone to rule him out of the Copa America.

Neymar isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s truly sad to see any brilliant player struggling to stay fit.
