Meet Andy Lonergan, the goalkeeper who could play for Liverpool v Southampton

Liverpool v Chelsea: UEFA Super Cup

Liverpool are in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis.

Alisson Becker sustained a calf injury after slipping while kicking the ball in Liverpool's Premier League opener against Norwich last Friday.

He is currently in a protective boot and is expected to be out for the next month.

Adrian replaced Alisson at Anfield and then starred in Liverpool's Super Cup victory over Chelsea.

The Spanish goalkeeper won the game for Liverpool after keeping out Tammy Abraham's spot-kick.

However, it has since emerged he is a doubt for Liverpool's game against Southampton on Saturday.

Adrian was accidentally slide tackled by a pitch invader shortly after his penalty heroics in Istanbul.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Adrian has a swollen ankle following the incident and could miss Saturday's match.

Andy Lonergan spent 11 years at Preston

"When we were all together, a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped, and kicked his ankle. Crazy," he said in his Friday press conference, per the Independent.

“Yesterday it was swollen, today I spoke to him he said it's much better than yesterday but we have to see. But apart from that, yes, it was a brilliant night for him for sure."

If Adrian doesn't recover in time, the Reds will likely turn to 35-year-old Andy Lonergan.

Andy Lonergan played in pre-season for Liverpool

The English goalkeeper has spent the large majority of his professional career playing in the Championship.

He made his debut for Preston in 2000 and went on to make 231 appearances across 11 seasons.

Lonergan even managed to score against Leicester City in 2004.

His kick upfield deceived Kevin Pressman, with the ball bouncing over him and into the net.

Lonergan then moved on to Leeds, before stints with Fulham and Wolves.

The Preston-born goalkeeper signed for Middlesborough at the start of last season as a backup.

After making just four appearances, Lonergan was shipped out on loan to League One outfit, Rochdale.

He played a crucial role for Rochdale as he helped them narrowly survive relegation.

Lonergan's contract with Middlesborough ended earlier this summer and he spent pre-season training with Liverpool to cope with their shortage of goalkeepers.

He signed a short-term contract with the club on Monday and he could well make his debut just five days later against Southampton.

What an incredible story. Lonergan turns 36 in two months and if he were to make his debut, he would become the oldest Englishman to make his Premier League debut in the 21st century.

Klopp said yes when asked if Lonergan was ready to deputise.

“Yeah. Andy Lonergan is in training with Kelleher and we have them if we have to make a decision," he said, per the Liverpool Echo.

“Adrian was a week before, Lonergan has trained with us. Kelleher has potential but is not 100 per cent yet. We will see.”
