Who could possibly forget Usain Bolt’s superhuman effort where he obliterated his own record on this day 10 years ago?

Cast your mind back a decade ago when Bolt sped out of the blocks in the final of the men's 100m and began to race away from the chasing pack.

Cast your mind even further back to 2008 in Beijing where he shocked sports fans everywhere by claiming gold and breaking the then world record.

A true track legend was beginning to make his mark on sporting history indelibly, but no one truly knew just how special he would become.

In the lead-up to the final in Berlin, Bolt was heralded as unbeatable, infallible and even unstoppable and to our sheer delight, he decided to put on a show, which captivated his adoring legion of supporters as well as the entire world.

He blasted through the previous rounds with minimal fuss, virtually swatting away his competitors with irreverence and a hint of arrogance.

However, nothing could have prepared the sporting public for what the man from Jamaica was about to deliver as we watched on eagerly awaiting Bolt’s breakneck speed.

The gun fired into the sky and they were off at the first time of asking.

Roared on by a raucously enthralled arena, Bolt actually flew off from his starting position and almost instantly sped away from his nearest rival (Tyson Gay who incidentally did his level best to match Bolt stride for stride).

To no avail, though, as Bolt went through the gears to claim gold at the World Championships for Jamaica for the first time and smash his own world record by 0.11 seconds.

Cue delirium in the stadium as the crowd celebrated wildly in unison.

He is a man who has normalised the abnormal. A freak of nature in the kindest possible sense. We will never see his like again. A bolt of lightning. Literally.
