WWE fans love to see dream matches become a reality and one match which some thought might become reality was AJ Styles vs Shawn Michaels.Styles even released a graphic of himself and Michaels in a face-off position to hype up a possible dream match between the two ahead of the 2017 Royal Rumble. However, the match never came into fruition as HBK was happily retired at the time, but he's since come out of retirement for a one-off match last year, so some WWE fans still have hope a clash with The Phenomenal One could still happen.During an interview with WWE's Cathy Kelley ahead of SummerSlam, Styles spoke about the dream match with Michaels and he explained why Michaels turned down the match. He said: “I would have loved the opportunity to have gotten in the ring with him. I’m not sure what it is about Shawn and I that people see as like, ‘Oh wow, these guys are one and the same.’

"I would like to think that there are so many great matches by Shawn and hopefully there are a lot of great matches that you see me in. And that’s the comparison. That [we’re] able to put on a show no matter who is in the ring with [us]. It’s certainly a compliment.”

Styles continued: “I asked Shawn [about a match] and he said ‘No.’ Well That’s on Shawn, guys. I can’t do anything about that. I would love to opportunity to do that match, But I get where he’s coming from too.

"It’s one of those things where, if you say you’re gonna retire — Now, granted, he had a match after his retirement, one match — but I understand not really wanting to do it. When I retire, I want to [stay] retired too.”

HBK's one match following his retirement took place at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia last year when he teamed up with Triple H as D-Generation X vs The Undertaker and Kane as the Brothers of Destruction.

Many fans have come to the conclusion that Michaels took part in this match because of the money that was being offered to him and the fact it would be easier to work at a slower pace with other legends, which is fair.

However, fans would have also loved to see him in a dream match with The Phenomenal One.
