Football managers in the modern era of the game have access to ludicrous supplies of cash.

If you're in charge of an elite side and are in need of a new signing to remedy an issue in your squad, millions of pounds will be handed to you at will.

Across Europe, managers are splashing the cash like never before, with billions being spent in each transfer window these days.

As a result of such overzealous spending, football now has three managers that have spent over £1bn on players throughout the course of their careers.

Pep Guadriola, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho are the three top dogs in the spending world, but how close are the chasing pack?

Well, below are the top 10 highest spending managers of all-time and there's no place for Sir Alex Ferguson, per Mirror.

10. Unai Emery - £634.23m

Players bought - 63

To be fair to Emery, the £198m PSG splashed on Neymar accounts for nearly a third of his spending as a manager.

The Spaniard was a shrewd dealer during his time with Sevilla and Valencia, while his spending at Arsenal hasn't been extreme in any sense.

9. Rafa Benitez - £677.42m

Players bought - 79

Newcastle never gave him money to spend, but Benitez did open his wallet during his stints with Liverpool, Chelsea and Napoli.

The £35m the latter spent on Gonzalo Higuain represents the current Dalian Yafing manager's most expensive purchase.

8. Claudio Ranieri - £720.93m

Players bought - 95

The miracle man behind Leicester's Premier League triumph, but one that didn't hesitate to spend the funds handed to him.

While in charge of AS Monaco, Ranieri brought in James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao for a combined fee of over £80m.

7. Roberto Mancini - £721.41m

Players bought - 79

The man who guided Man City to their first Premier League title and also brought Sergio Aguero to the club for £36m - his most expensive signing.

Mancini's spending will certainly be nullified for a few years as he is currently the manager of the Italian national team.

6. Arsene Wenger - £867.38m

Players bought - 103

A shrewd operator in the transfer market, but Wenger knew when to open Arsenal's wallet.

The signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £56m was the Frenchman's biggest ever splurge in the transfer market.

5. Max Allegri - £914m

Players bought - 87

Allegri is currently without a job after leaving Juventus, where he certainly didn't hesitate to spend.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Higuain, Joao Cancelo and more all arrived for some seriously big fees during his time in Turin.

4. Manuel Pellegrini - £949.14m

Players bought - 82

Pellegrini was actually the man who brought Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80m back in 2009.

The current West Ham boss also signed Kevin De Bruyne for Man City and he's also spent big at the Hammers on the likes of Sebastian Haller and Felipe Anderson.

3. Pep Guardiola - £1.03bn

Players bought - 52

The least amount of players purchased in the top 10, but a mammoth combined expenditure of over £1bn.

Guardiola is a revolutionary tactician, but he does love spending.

2. Carlo Ancelotti - £1.11bn

Players bought - 85

AC Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and now Napoli, quite the list of clubs of any manager, so it's no wonder Ancelotti has spent so much in his long managerial career.

Gareth Bale remains his record signing, though.

1. Jose Mourinho - £1.40bn

Players bought - 97

That's a serious amount of money. Two stints at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Manchester United was always going to mean a lot of signings, but Mourinho's expenditure is still remarkable.

Mourinho wants the best and doesn't care if he has to spend to get it. Ironically, Paul Pogba is the Special One's most expensive signing.
