With the weight of replacing Eden Hazard on his shoulders, Christian Pulisic is already impressing in Chelsea colours.
The 20-year-old signed for the Blues back in January but is only just settling into life in England after spending the remainder of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
After a positive pre-season, Pulisic made his first full debut for Chelsea on Wednesday night in their Super Cup defeat against Liverpool.
Despite losing on penalties after drawing 2-2, the attacking midfielder began to show why he was brought to the club and assisted the Blues’ first goal which was finished off by Olivier Giroud.
Pulisic has also been tipped to become a ‘massive asset’ for Chelsea by former Blue Tony Cascarino who also compared him to Arjen Robben.
It’s safe to say, excitement is building around the youngster.
And it seems Chelsea fans not only have their club to thank for luring him to London but also former boss Jose Mourinho.
That’s because Pulisic turned down a potential move to Manchester United in January because of the Portuguese’s lack of desire to promote young players, according to former coach Robin Walker.
Walker played a vital role in Pulisic’s development after coaching him at youth level when the 20-year-old was at non-league side Brackley Town.
And he told The Telegraph: “I’m a Chelsea fan, I grew up in London supporting them.
“When I was in Dortmund last year, I told him that he had to come.
“He wouldn’t go to Manchester United because of Jose Mourinho. His father couldn’t stand Mourinho, because he didn’t promote young players.
“It was at that point I asked: ‘What about London? That’s where it’s at.’
“I was trying to sell the city. His agent agreed, saying: ‘When you make these decisions, it’s all about investment and property.’
“I was delighted that he did sign.”
Had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer been in charge at the time, Pulisic may have been wearing Man United red this season.
