Philippe Coutinho’s 18-month nightmare at Barcelona is finally coming to an end.

The Brazilian is set to join Bayern Munich on loan with an option to buy after the Bundesliga champions on Friday announced they’ve reached an agreement with his current club.

Coutinho should soon be unveiled at the Allianz Arena pending the successful completion of his medical in the coming days.

The former Liverpool playmaker will become Niko Kovac’s sixth arrival of the summer following Benjamin Pavard, Lucas Hernandez, Jann-Fiete Arp, Ivan Perisic and Mickael Cuisance.

Bayern have spent a total of £120 million in the off-season - the amount required to sign Coutinho permanently in 12 months’ time, per The Sun.

That’s £25 million less than the fee Barcelona paid Liverpool to land Coutinho in January 2018, though it’s difficult to argue he’s worth that price at present.

The 27-year-old enjoyed scintillating form for much of his Anfield career, contributing 54 goals and 45 assists across five campaigns.

His record for the Catalonians hasn’t been as impressive, with just 21 goals and 11 assists in 76 appearances.

However, there’s no doubting the quality Coutinho has to offer, and Marko Grujic - who trained alongside him at Melwood - is convinced he won’t just set the Bundesliga alight but dominate it.

"It's a big deal for the whole Bundesliga that we now have the opportunity to see Coutinho," the Hertha Berlin midfielder told German newspaper Bild, via AS.

"He is a special, exciting player, capable of crazy things. He has incredible tricks and skills. I enjoyed every training session with him.

"He will be the best footballer in Germany by far.”

It’s a big call about a player who’s shown only glimpses of his talent since leaving Merseyside.

Coutinho could get his first chance to shine when Bayern visit rivals Schalke next Saturday.

It’s hardly an ideal fixture for a newcomer to settle into the Bundesliga, but the 28-time league winners can ill-afford for anyone to underperform after drawing 2-2 in their opening match against Hertha Berlin.
