You couldn’t blame Liverpool fans for fearing the worst ahead of their trip to Southampton on Saturday.Less than 72 hours previously, Jurgen Klopp’s side had to play 120 minutes against Chelsea in the Super Cup in the stifling Turkish heat. They may have won the penalty shootout but some players couldn’t even walk as Wednesday night turned into Thursday morning in Istanbul. As a result, Klopp had no choice but to make changes for the tough trip to St. Mary’s.One of the players that dropped to the bench was captain Jordan Henderson, who was one of six players to play the entire 120 minutes against Chelsea in midweek.

And he may have got the afternoon off on the south coast if Adrian hadn’t given the Saints a way back into the match.

Liverpool led 2-0 thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino but, after Adrian gifted Danny Ings a goal with seven minutes remaining, it was set to be a very nervy finish for the Reds.

In an attempt to calm things down, Klopp introduced Henderson in the 89th-minute.

And fans have noticed Henderson’s first act upon stepping foot onto the pitch - turning down the captain’s armband from Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk had worn the armband for the first 89 minutes of the match and offered to hand it down when the club captain entered the game.

But Henderson waved him away and appeared to shout ‘Keep it.’

It may seem a small gesture but Liverpool fans on Reddit were heavily praising him for showing such maturity and leadership.

“He's coming on to organise his team who have just conceded a freak goal and look in danger of conceding another and dropping 2 points, no time for formalities, everybody knows who the captain is anyway,” one fan wrote.

Another added: “And this kind of act is exactly why I love him. His main concern is always the TEAM and the performance. True Captain in every sense of the word.”

A third said: “Anyone who is a leader, doesn't have to show he is a leader.”
