Paul Pogba was heavily criticised on social media after spurning a golden opportunity to help Manchester United beat Wolves at Molineux on Monday evening. The Frenchman took responsibly for a second-half penalty with the scores locked at 1-1, but saw his spot-kick saved by Rui Patricio.Angry United fans questioned why Pogba was the player who took the penalty instead of Marcus Rashford, who scored from the spot during last weekend’s 4-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.Former United captain Gary Neville was particularly livid on Monday Night Football.Moments after the full-time whistle was blown, Neville admitted he was fuming with Pogba but stopped short of laying into the midfielder before finding out which player should have taken the penalty.

"Before he took the penalty I was fuming," Neville said. "However we have looked back at the penalty last week that Rashford took against Chelsea and Pogba had a long chat before. I don’t like it.

"Why is there a debate on who takes a penalty? Pogba has missed four in the last 12 months – so you would think he’s had his chance now. Rashford scored last week, take the penalty.

"But there wasn’t a leader on the pitch. You saw the clips there, [Daniel] James was there, [Anthony] Martial, they couldn't make a decision between them. Something is not right there.

"Initially I was fuming with Pogba. I thought 'Typical you, you’re selfish' Why you even thinking of taking a penalty off a player?'

"But actually last week's one, it's weird, something is not right. Solskjaer is going to be able to shed light on it."

We then saw the incident against Chelsea and Neville pointed out an on-pitch discussion, which wasn’t highlighted at the time, between Rashford and Pogba.

Solskjaer then cleared the situation up in his post-match interview by revealing that both Rashford and Pogba are currently United’s first-choice penalty takers.

"The two of them are designated penalty takers," Solskjaer said on Sky Sports. "It is up to them who take it there and then.

"Sometimes players feel like they are confident to score. Today Patricio made a good save.

"You can see the slide on the powerpoint that this is the plan.

"We won't change it after this week. The two have been confident. Last week Marcus scored a goal and today Paul was confident.

"I like players with confidence."

Rashford, meanwhile, added: "Paul wanted to take it. It is that simple. Everyone can miss one. He has scored plenty of penalties in his United career.

"If you want to take it you take it. I took one last week and it is unfortunate he missed.

"The confidence you will score the goal is always high. There is no reason you wouldn't be confident to take it. It isn't just on him, it is on the team."

But Neville, like many United fans, still felt that Rashford should have taken the penalty against Wolves.

"It settles the anger I had around Pogba taking the penalty off Rashford,” he said after hearing Solskjaer’s explanation.

"I understand you have two penalty takers but Pogba has missed four in the last 12 months.

"Surely the player who scores last week should take it this week."
