Daniel Cormier has suggested that he may retire after losing his heavyweight title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241.

The 40-year-old had been leading on the scorecards heading into the fourth round but was caught with a right hand late on, leading to his TKO defeat.

Cormier suffered his first defeat in four-and-a-half years and took to Instagram after the fight to inform fans that he is contemplating his future in the sport.

The veteran fighter wrote: "It's been a couple of days and I can't stress the disappointment, I am so sorry to all I have let down.

"To my wife and kids I am so sorry you guys had to experience that, I never wanted y'all to see that and the hurt you guys showed breaks my heart everytime I think about it."

The Louisiana native continued: "My coaches I am sorry, i appreciate the work and time you've spent with me. My fans, thank you guys for all the love and support you have guided me to all these amazing accomplishments.

"Stipe Miocic and his team, congratulations on a tremendous victory, you showed so much heart and grit, you are the definition of Cleveland tough.

"Dana White and all at the UFC thank you all for everything you have done for me and my family.

"This has been the most amazing journey, I will decide what I am gonna do now, and as soon as I decide you will all know right away. I love you all."

DC's retirement would see one of the greatest fighters in UFC history call time on an illustrious career which has seen him win titles in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions.

Cormier boasted an impressive heavyweight record, suffering just two defeats in his 24 bouts. Some of the American's most memorable fights were against Jon Jones, but were unfortunately overshadowed by controversy over his opponent's failed drug tests.

DC has been revered within the sport, with UFC president Dana White and commentator Joe Rogan claiming he was one of the greatest ever Mixed Martial Arts fighters.

If the fighter does decide to retire, he will be sorely missed by fans and professionals alike.
