Paul Pogba had a penalty saved as Manchester United only managed a 1-1 draw against Wolves in the Premier League on Monday night.

It was the Frenchman who won the spot-kick and, after a lengthy conversation with Marcus Rashford, he decided to take it.

But Rui Patricio dived the right way to palm away Pogba's powerful strike and keep the scoreline at 1-1.

Pogba's decision to take the penalty sparked confusion amongst football fans after Rashford had scored from the spot a week previously against Chelsea.

Gary Neville was furious in the Sky Sports studio, but United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained all in his post-match interview.

"They are the two designated penalty takers," he said when asked why Pogba took the penalty instead of Rashford. "The two of them are confident and good penalty takers.

"When there are two names there, it's the one who is the most confident [who takes it]. Paul has scored many before, so there's absolutely no problem.

"Sometimes in a game you grow in confidence. Sometimes [you think]: 'I don't want to take it today because I had a bad game.'

"I've absolutely no problem with players walking up and saying: 'This is mine.'"

Having two designated takers is an unorthodox approach to penalty taking and it sounds like Solskjaer is just trying to keep both players happy.

What he needs to do is select one penalty taker and have done with it, because that would eliminate any confusion.

It's a lesson Sir Alex Ferguson learned as manager during the 2012/13 season, when United missed their first three penalties from three different takers.

Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Nani all missed for the Red Devils to make Sir Alex realise that United needed one designated taker.

After a 1-0 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League, Fergie said: "To be honest with you, I had no idea [that Nani would take the penalty].

"I think Nani just ran and grabbed the ball. I thought Robin should have taken it. I think we will have to decide before the game - that was my fault, I should have done that."

It's a problem that's plagued United for a decade and after Pogba's miss, one fan has compiled several examples of them missing penalties because of confusion in a Twitter thread.
