Sadly, it wasn’t the football that grabbed the headlines on Monday night.

Manchester United’s draw away at Wolves was actually a wonderfully entertaining game as Anthony Martial’s first-half strike was cancelled out by a Ruben Neves screamer in the second stanza.

Paul Pogba also saw his powerful penalty brilliantly saved by Rui Patricio as both sides settled for a point in the end.

However, as a result of his failure from the spot, Pogba was subjected to some simply vile racial abuse by some ‘fans’ on Twitter.

Yes, it’s 2019 and people still do this kind of thing.

As if the blatant racism wasn’t enough, a few even went as far as to issue death threats to the French World Cup winner.

It is simply unacceptable behaviour that can never be excused and Pogba’s teammates soon leapt to condemn the actions of the online trolls.

Both Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford took to their own social media accounts to call for an immediate end to such incidents which rear their ugly head all too often in the world of football.

Now, according to a report in The Times, Greater Manchester Police will assist United in hunting down those responsible for the ghastly tweets as the club seek to issue lifetime bans.

Fantastic news.

We can only hope that those responsible are tracked down as soon as possible and given their just rewards.

How one can call themselves a fan while at the same time abusing their clubs top player is simply beyond the pale.

Pogba was - despite all the various controversies - by far and away United’s best player last season.

He was the clubs top scorer and registered the most assists and this is the thanks he gets.

Unbelievable.

Thank goodness the police are now involved but sadly, you can’t help but feel this isn’t the last instalment in the racism saga.

One can only hope that the punishments handed out to those responsible act as an apt deterrent to other trolls out there.

This simply has to end.
