Get excited people, the Champions League is getting closer and closer.

Now that everybody has the football bug again after the resumption of the Premier League, fans are starting to gear up for European football and the group-stage draw is just eight days away.

For Liverpool, they will enter the competition on cloud nine after conquering Europe for the sixth time last season, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 during the final in Madrid.

It might not have been the entertaining climax that people had been expecting, but it still rewarded the Reds for an incredible run that included a comeback from 3-0 down against Barcelona.

Jurgen Klopp will be determined to retain the title, too, having reached two consecutive finals, yet winning back-to-back Champions League crowns is no easy feat.

Champions League draw approaching

Real Madrid became the first club to achieve a succession of titles in the modern era, but they admittedly had Cristiano Ronaldo - arguably European football's greatest ever - on their side.

But before Liverpool can look at another assault on the trophy, they must negate the group stages and that certainly wasn't easy last season when they edged out Napoli in a must-win final game.

Liverpool were given an incredibly tough group in 2018-19 with Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade joining the Neapolitans in a cutthroat round-robin.

Potential draws for Liverpool

However, Liverpool might have to prepare themselves for a similar scenario this season and that's despite being automatically placed in pot one as the reigning champions.

The situation is still dependant on the results from play-off games, but if we include all the the teams that are still in with a chance of making the pot, here are the best and worst-case scenarios:

Best-case scenario: Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, CFR Cluj and APOEL Nicosia.

Worst-case scenario: Liverpool, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and RB Leipzig.

That pessimistic outlook would certainly give Klopp some sleepless nights and it's all the more possible when you consider those three teams have already qualified automatically.

Even if Liverpool are drawn in that group, though, they can draw upon the legacy of last season to pull them through and will simply hope to maintain a better record away from home.

But if nothing else, it would be fascinating to see Liverpool lock horns with Real again - as well as Mohamed Salah and Sergio Ramos - after the drama of the 2018 final in Kiev.

Meanwhile, there are a few moving parts needed for Liverpool's dream scenario, so the Reds need to hope that both CFR Cluj and APOEL Nicosia come good in their play-off second legs.

Chelsea and Manchester City could also find themselves in very similar situations, too, with both clubs also in pot one as Europa League and Premier League winners respectively.

So, keep your fingers crossed Liverpool fans and roll around August 29!
