England's new speed sensation Jofra Archer has swapped the ball for a bat to give his best go at Steve Smith's patented leave.

The former Aussie captain has caught the eye of fans and pros alike with his strange technique of leaving the ball outside the off-stump.

In a video shared by Cricket Australia's website, Archer can be seen imitating Smith's straight drive, before mastering the Sydney man's off-stump leave.

Glenn Maxwell caught the eye of cricket fans when he became one of the first to impersonate his fellow Aussie while doing motion capture for the 2017 Ashes Game.

Fans also took to Twitter to have their say on Smith's strategy during the second Test.

"I'd rather watch a 24-hour compilation of Steve Smith leaving the ball than face Jofra Archer," one fan posted.

Another fan tweeted: "Leaving the ball is also a very important part of batsmanship in 5-day matches, but if the matter is how you leave it then Steve Smith might be the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to leave the ball in some style. #Ashes."

Unfortunately for those who enjoyed watching Smith's unorthodox technique, the series' top run-scorer was ruled out of the third Test after suffering a concussion to a rapid short ball from Archer as he looked towards another Ashes century.

The gripping Lord's dual between the two had a nasty end, as the 30-year-old took the full brunt of a 92mph delivery to the top of his neck on the fourth day.

After starting the series in rapid form, Smith has racked up two centuries and a 92 in the opening Tests, but broke an unwanted record as he became a part of the first ever use of a concussion substitute; Marnus Labuschagne the one chosen to fill Smith's shoes.

Archer's antics come ahead of the third Ashes Test which starts today at Headingley, with England needing a win to level the series going into the Old Trafford and The Oval Tests.
