While it was an improvement on last season's 5-1 humiliation, the gulf in class between the two sides was still very, very noticeable.
However, there was one big positive for Gunners supporters in the form of £72m summer signing Nicolas Pepe.
The Ivorian winger made his full debut for the club and looked a constant threat.
Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson - two of the best defenders in world football - struggled to deal with his pace and trickery throughout.

Pepe should have put Arsenal in front in the first-half, but Adrian managed to thwart him one-on-one.
But the fact he caused so much chaos against one of the world's best backlines when not 100% match fit suggests he is going to be a serious problem in the Premier League.
In fact, his stats from the game support that theory, because Pepe completed seven dribbles against Liverpool - more than any Premier League player has managed in a single game this season.

Not bad, Nicolas, not bad.
His ability to carry the ball forward added a new dimension to Arsenal's attack against Liverpool and will be key to Unai Emery's side in their bid to break back into the top four.
Last season, the Gunners were way too reliant on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to create and score goals.
With Pepe, they have a new quality attacking source, one which is going to give defenders up and down the country nightmares.
That £72m transfer fee could look like a bargain in years to come.News Now - Sport News
