It proved to be the same old story for Arsenal when they travelled to Anfield yesterday.

They found themselves on the receiving end of a 3-1 score-line as they failed to beat Liverpool away from home in the league for a seventh successive season.

Arsenal were 3-0 down when they found the net through Lucas Torreira with five minutes to go in too little too late circumstances.

Joel Matip opened the scoring on 41 minutes before Mohamed Salah bagged a second half brace to seal the win for the Merseyside outfit.

And one of the Egyptian’s goals came from the spot after he had his shirt tugged in the box by David Luiz.

However, despite the clear foul, Unai Emery disagreed with the referee’s decision to award the penalty.

After the game, the Arsenal boss said, via the Guardian: “The penalty was the key to the game, but it was very soft.

“If that is considered holding then I don’t think it was enough.”

In Emery’s defence, the tug didn’t bring Salah to the ground and according to Luiz himself, the Liverpool star told him that he didn’t feel the contact.

But nevertheless, if a player pulls on an opponent’s shirt, the referee is likely to blow his whistle, especially with the help of VAR.

Emery then went on to highlight his disappointment at conceding the penalty so early into the second period after a positive first half:

“It was disappointing to concede a goal at that time in the game because we had done quite well in the first half, we made two or three chances to score and we were defending their crosses very well.

“We can be optimistic for the future, I thought [Joe] Willock and [Nicolas] Pépé played well.

“We wanted to keep the ball more, but Liverpool’s press was very strong.”

The Gunners will now be hoping to return to winning ways when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Emirates next Sunday.
