In 2015, Frenkie De Jong watched Barca v Betis from the stands as a fan - in 2019 he played in it

FC Barcelona v Arsenal - Pre-Season Friendly

What a year it has been for Frenkie De Jong.

The midfield star was the driving force behind Ajax’s incredible 2018/19 season that saw them clinch Eridivise glory before coming within seconds of a Champions League final.

The 22-year-old scored four goals and registered four assists but it was his grit and maturity that caught the eye of Europe’s big boys.

Barcelona soon came knocking and De Jong secured his dream move before the season was officially out.

Now, the youngster has donned the famous colours of Catalonia on two occasions and has hardly looked out of place.

It has been an incredible rise for the starlet, who only four years ago was merely dreaming of taking to the hallowed turf of the Camp Nou in Barca colours.

In fact, a wonderful tweet started doing the rounds last night after De Jong played a part in his new sides win over Real Betis.

Included in the tweet is a picture showing De Jong and his girlfriend watching the same game from the stands of Barcelona’s famous colosseum in 2015.

Then, underneath, is a photo of De Jong’s girlfriend sitting in the stands watching her boy play in that very same fixture four years later.

Brilliant - dreams really do come true.

De Jong has a massive season ahead of him as Barca look to continue their domestic dominance while at the same time desperately hunting for European glory.

With Lionel Messi set to come back into the fold, Antoine Griezmann already showing positive signs and of course De Jong marshalling the midfield, Barca could take quite some stopping.
