It is being reported that UFC star Conor McGregor is very close to agreeing to compete against Floyd Mayweather in a revamped version of the hit 1970s BBC show Superstars on New Year's Eve.

The two giants previously clashed in their hugely anticipated mega-fight back in August 2017, which Mayweather won relatively comfortably by TKO in the 10th round.

McGregor has not been seen in-ring since October last year, after he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.

It is now being claimed that McGregor has been offered an incredible £10 million for a New Year's Eve showdown in Japan.

According to talkSPORT, as per the Daily Star, a source has said: "Conor is on the edge of signing.

"There is no direct combat involved so it doesn't breach his UFC contract and he should be fine to take part."

Superstars was a much-loved programme which saw contestants participate in what was essentially a decathlon, involving sports such as running, rowing, tennis, basketball, shooting and swimming.

Points are awarded depending on the position of the competitor, with the overall winner being declared champion.

This wouldn't be the first time that Mayweather spends his New Year's Eve in Japan.

Last year, Mayweather defeated Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in a squash match, after being offered $9 million for a nine-minute contest.

Mayweather toyed around with his young opponent for the first minute, before dropping him three times, ending with a stoppage victory for 'Money.'

In his post-fight interview, Mayweather insisted that he is still retired from boxing and won't be returning to compete in the sport any time in the future, casting a potential physical rematch between the Irishman and himself into heavy doubt.

For the moment, it seems that this is as close as we'll get to a McGregor v Mayweather rematch, and while it's probably not what you were expecting, it will surely be entertaining if McGregor does agree to go ahead with the signing.
