NFL team asks US Women's Carli Lloyd to play for them in pre-season game

Carli Lloyd has enjoyed a fantastic career.

The US women’s national team player has won two World Cup titles and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2015.

But Lloyd’s future may lie in another sport – American football.

The 37-year-old has been asked by an NFL team to kick in their final pre-season game, according to her trainer James Galanis.

Lloyd’s talents came to light when the Philadelphia Eagles invited her to their joint session with the Baltimore Ravens last week.

Footage of Lloyd kicking a 55-yard field goal went rival and it’s led to enquiries from several NFL teams.

“One was willing to put her on the roster,” Galanis told Fox Sports. “She was told [she could] play on Thursday.

“I don’t want to say who it is [the team]. But she is playing Thursday with the national team, so that was the conflict.”

The US, who won the World Cup for a fourth time in July, will play a friendly against Portugal in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Women have played at college and professional level but they are yet to play in a pre-season or regular season NFL game.

But Lloyd believes she could actually do it as a kicker.

“I know that I could actually probably do it,” Lloyd told Peter King of NBC’s Football Morning in America, per ProFootballTalk.

“Put on the helmet, strap on the pads, go for it. The mindset I have, I think with practice, I know I have to work on my steps and my technique, but I think I could do it and do it well.

“It could be a huge pivotal moment. There is no reason why a woman could not do this.

“And I actually invite the pressure. I love the pressure. When I have to nail something – shooting hoops, ax-throwing, kicking a field goal – that is the moment I live for and want. It comes down to the mind, training the mind.

“It’s worth having some conversations about it. With practice and someone showing me, I know I can do it. I have one of the most accurate shots in our game.

Big thing would be getting used to the big boys out there. But nothing scares me.

“You hold yourself back if you’re afraid. What’s the worst that can happen? I don’t make the team? Let’s just say I did try. Maybe I change the landscape a lot.”

Lloyd told Fox Sports that she’s ‘seriously considering’ the offer

NFL Hall of Fame executive Gil Brandt replied to the clip of Lloyd’s field goal saying: “Honestly, I don’t think it will be long before we see a woman break through this NFL barrier.

“I’d give her an honest tryout if I were, say, the Bears.”
