Twitter thread on Cristiano Ronaldo aged 34 compared to football legends backfires

Cristiano Ronaldo recently insisted he could keep playing professional football beyond the age of 40 and you wouldn't put it past him to do just that.

Now 34 - he turns 35 in February - the Juventus man remains one of the best players in the world, which is largely down to his work ethic away from the pitch.

Ronaldo lives for healthy eating, going to the gym and spending long hours on the training ground in order to stay at the peak of his powers.

And it's working for him. In his debut season for Juventus, the Portuguese scored 28 goals in all competitions en route to winning Serie A and the Coppa Italiana.

He also won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, scoring three goals in the finals to win top goalscorer and take his overall tally to 31.

Ronaldo deserves a lot of respect for what he's achieved since joining Juve for €100m, but it's important to not get carried away.

One fan has created a Twitter thread claiming that what Ronaldo is currently doing at 34 years old won't be witnessed again.

Comparisons have been made to football legends like Johan Cruff, Pele and Zinedine Zidane during the seasons they turned 34. Check it out below and see if you can spot the issues.

Here's how fellow fans reacted to the thread.

So, statistically speaking Ronaldo was more prolific than Cruyff, Brazilian Ronaldo, Pele, Diego Maradona and Zidane in the seasons they all turned 34.

But let's not forget that Cruyff, Maradona and Zidane were all attacking midfielders during their prime, not strikers, so it's impossible to compare.

Ronaldo (21) was also beaten comfortably beaten by 36-year-old striker Fabio Quagliarella (26) in the race for Serie A top goalscorer last season.

And in the season Zlatan Ibrahimovic turned 34 at Paris Saint-Germain, he scored 50 goals and recorded 19 assists in all competitions.

Ronaldo may still be a machine at 34, but his days of scoring ludicrous amounts of goals every season are well and truly behind him.
