Tuesday August 27 will always be remembered as a very sad day for English football.

It marks the day that the EFL expelled Bury from the Football League after a takeover bid from C&N Sporting Risk collapsed.

EFL executive chair Debbie Jevans said it was "one of the darkest days" in English football history, adding: "I understand this will be a deeply upsetting and devastating time for Bury's players, staff, supporters and the wider community.

"There is no doubt today's news will be felt across the entire football family."

What makes the news even more worrying is the fact that another League One club could join them - Bolton.

Bolton have been given a 14-day expulsion threat to find a buyer or prove they have the funds to complete the season.

Bolton are a founder member of the Football League and spent many of their years in the top-flight.

During a four-season period between 2003/04 and 2006/07, the Trotters finished 8th, 6th, 8th and 7th.

So, with the future of the club in doubt, we’ve decided to take a look at Bolton’s iconic 2004/05 campaign, in which they finished sixth and qualified for the UEFA Cup.

Not only did they finish sixth, but they also finished level on points with Liverpool on fifth - who won the Champions League that season.

They were also only three points behind Everton, who qualified for Europe’s elite competition.

Imagine Bolton in the Champions League.

But what did their squad look like?

GOALKEEPER | Jussi Jaaskelainen

A true Bolton legend. 527 appearances for the club.

DEFENDER | Bruno N’Gotty

Played 37 of the 38 league matches during the 04/05 season. Stayed at Bolton for five seasons in total.

DEFENDER | Ricardo Gardner

Another Bolton icon. 409 appearances during his 14-year stay.

DEFENDER | Nicky Hunt

Started his career at Bolton, where he played 161 times. Still playing for Crewe in League Two.

DEFENDER | Ivan Campo

Bolton signing players from Real Madrid. Madness. Campo initially joined the Wanderers on loan, but signed permanently for a further five seasons. Hero.

MIDFIELDER | Gary Speed

The late, great, Gary Speed. The Premier League stalwart spent four seasons at Bolton.

MIDFIELDER | Jay-Jay Okocha

The captain and the flair player. Remember that rainbow flick against Arsenal. What a player.

MIDFIELDER | Stelios Giannakopoulos

The Euro 2004 hero for Greece. The winger played 177 times for Bolton over the course of five seasons.

MIDFIELDER | Kevin Nolan

Bolton was the start of Nolan’s career, playing 345 matches for the club scoring 50 goals.

Nolan would go on and inherit the captain’s armband from Okocha. A proper Bolton legend.

STRIKER | Kevin Davies

There wasn’t a single Premier League defender that enjoyed playing against Davies. You know you’d get an elbow in the face. Davies spent 10 seasons at Bolton, playing more than 400 times.

STRIKER | El Hadji Diouf

Not the most likeable character but he scored nine Premier League goals to help Bolton finish sixth in 2004/05. He actually spent four seasons at Bolton - longer than any other club during his career.
