Lionel Messi v Cristiano Ronaldo is a debate that will never end - even after both players have long retired.

We all have our own opinions over which of the two superstars is the better footballer.

And because it’s a subjective matter, there’s no right or wrong answer. So the debate - much like the previous Pele v Diego Maradona debate - will go on and on.

In terms of cold, hard statistics, there’s little to separate them.

Both forwards have scored extraordinary numbers of goals during their respective careers and won a host of major honours - both team and individual - in the process.

Ronaldo has enjoyed slightly more success on the international stage - winning Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League with Portugal - although Messi won an Olympic Gold medal with Argentina in 2008 and has reached a number of major international finals, including the 2014 World Cup final.

Ultimately, both footballers are among the best of all time.

Quite where they sit on the pantheon of all-time greats is purely down to personal opinion.

Twitter, however, appeared to have nailed their colours to the mast this week.

On Wednesday night, @TwitterSports (who boast 15.3 million followers) controversially responded with a GIF of Messi wagging his finger and saying ‘no’ after Goal tweeted: “Messi and Ronaldo can both be the GOAT 🐐”

Needless to say, this sparked quite the reaction from both Messi and Ronaldo’s hardcore fans…

Twitter refused to back down, however, and responded “Been trying to tell y'all 😉“ after one of Messi’s fans tweeted: “Twitter sports is accurate af.”

And they posted another GIF of Messi smiling and waving when another Messi fan wrote: “Twitter sports won the best reply award ❤❤❤❤”

It’s official: Twitter is #TeamMessi.
