Cody Rhodes will face Shawn Spears at AEW's All Out this weekend, but their feud kicked off after arguably the most controversial spot in the promotion's short history, an unprotected chair shot to the head.

At AEW's Fyter Fest show back in June, after Cody and Darby Allin fought to a time limit draw, Spears stormed the ring with a chair in hand and hit Cody in the back of the head.

The chair was gimmicked, but the undamaged rim of the chair caught the AEW executive vice president in the back of the head, causing blood to pour onto the ring.

Luckily, Cody only required 12 surgical staples, but the nature of the chair shot to the head and the history it has with causing CTE and head trauma in wrestlers spurred fan outrage online after the event.

In 2010, WWE legitimately banned all chair shots to the head following the Chris Benoit double-murder and suicide in 2007, so many fans were shocked and surprised when AEW did an unprotected chair shot to the head spot back in June.

AEW's president Tony Khan called the spot 'regrettable' and chalked the accident up to 'pilot error', but according to reports, the promotion has now gone one step further.

According to a report from SB Nation’s James Dator on the Fyter Fest incident specifically and unprotected chair shots to the head in general, a source in AEW told him that they will essentially be banning the spot going forward.

There were some fans that liked the unprotected chair shot to the head as it brought a hardcore element back to wrestling that has been missing from modern wrestling.

However, the vast majority of fans don't want to see it as the risks outweigh the benefits.

At least now it looks like we won't be seeing any unprotected chair shots to the head in AEW moving forward.

Yet, you have to wonder if the feud between Cody and Spears would have gathered the heat it did without it.

Both wrestlers have hardly mentioned it during their promos for their match this Saturday, but it definitely brought more attention to their feud and AEW as a whole.

It looks like the unprotected chair shot to the head Cody took at Fyter Fest will be AEW's first and the last chair shot to the head.
