Back in October, Chris Sutton said Virgil van Dijk was the third best player in the world

To say Liverpool's gamble of signing Virgil van Dijk for £75m has paid off would be the understatement of all understatements.

Ever since the Dutchman's arrival back in January of 2018, the Reds have grown into one of the finest teams in world football.

It is no coincidence that in his short time on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp's side have reached two consecutive Champions League finals - winning the competition in 2019.

Due to his performances in the Premier League, Van Dijk was awarded PFA Player of the Year accolade in 2018/19, an extraordinary feat for a defender.

Oh and he was also named as the UEFA Men's Player of the Year on Thursday evening, pipping both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.

But when BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton tried to argue that Van Dijk was the third best in the world back in October, he was heavily criticised for doing so.

And the replies when BT uploaded the footage of Sutton's praise for the Dutchman look absolutely hilarious now.

One fan claims Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are superior, while another states that Van Dijk isn't even the best defender on Merseyside.

'He’s not even the best defender in the world. Sutton is everything that’s wrong with modern punditry.'

'He's not even the third best defender in the league! Alonso is better, Azpilicueta is better, Walker and Trippier are better the list goes on.'

'Not when Schindler (who cost £1.8m) had a vastly better game, covering the whole pitch and making crucial tackles, and all Van Dijk could do was throw Depoitre on the ground.'

'Not even in the top 3 centre backs in the world let alone top 3 in the world overall.'

'He isn't even the third best defender in the world.'

The beauty of hindsight, eh?

While not everyone foresaw Van Dijk reaching the heights he is currently at, he was already excelling back in October.

He was marshalling Liverpool's defence like he had been at the club for a decade, leading them to an unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Now, he's the best defender in world football and the odds-on favourite to win the Ballon d'Or. Amazingly, Sutton saw this coming...
