Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at St Mary's.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are now winless in their last three Premier league fixtures after their opening weekend victory over Chelsea.

Summer signing Daniel James got the visitors off to the perfect start with a sensational goal inside 10 minutes - his third of the season.

But United were unable to build on their advantage and eventually conceded courtesy of Saints central defender Jannik Vestergaard.

The big Dane out jumped Victor Lindelof in the box to seal a priceless point for Ralph Hassenhuttl's men, who played the final 20 minutes with 10 men after Kevin Danso's red card.

Southampton started on the front foot, with Sofiane Boufal dragging a shot just wide of David de Gea's post.

But the hosts were caught on the counter in the 10th-minute, when James fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to cap off a brilliant move.

The visitors gained control of the game after James' stunning strike, with United's press regularly catching out the Saints' rearguard.

On the half hour mark, Marcus Rashford's blushes were spared by the offside flag, when the England forward missed a point-blank header from James' cross.

Towards the end of the half, Southampton started to reassert some authority, but were unable to test De Gea's goal before the break.

After the restart, Rashford had a great chance to make it two, but he just couldn't roll a bouncing through ball underneath the onrushing Angus Gunn.

Che Adams had the first big chance for the visitors on 55 minutes, latching on to Boufal's pass, but the summer signing flashed the ball hopelessly wide from inside the box.

But just two minutes later, the Saints drew level thanks to Jannik Vestergaard, as the Danish defender leapt above a weak Victor Lindelof to head home from close range.

The pendulum swung back in United's favour on 72 minutes when left-back Danso was shown his second yellow card for a needless challenge on Scott McTominay.

United dominated the ball thereafter, but couldn't find a way past the Saints' determined back line, with Mason Greenwood and Ashley Young both going close from distance.
