Not many people foresaw UFC 241 ending the way it did last month.

What was potentially the final time we may have seen Daniel Cormier inside the Octagon proved to be a disappointment for himself, as he succumbed to a flurry of punches in round four from Stipe Miocic.

The two had faced each other for the first time in July 2018, where Cormier won the heavyweight title for the first time, and it took over a year for Miocic to exact his revenge.

His victory two weeks ago has sparked more talk of retirement for 40-year-old Cormier, who ideally wanted to have been away from the sport once he had turned that age earlier in the year.

Cormier refused to comment on his immediate future following the loss, with UFC President Dana White telling him to spend some time with his family - but also stating he didn't want to see him retire just yet.

There's a chance of a trilogy fight between Miocic and Cormier for the title, and that is an option that excites DC's training partner Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Russian though believes whatever the result of that fight if it happens, Cormier should then walk away from MMA before he turns 41.

“I really want him to fight with Stipe Miocic rematch and finish his career,” Nurmagomedov said in a pre-UFC 242 press conference, where he was promoting his upcoming fight against Dustin Poirier, per MMA Mania.

“This is what I want. I don’t know about his plan but honestly I want him to fight maybe February or March, fight with him last fight and then finish.”

It's proven to be a tough few weeks for Cormier after not only losing his title, but also losing his father to cancer last week.

That may make him more motivated than ever to make a return and prove a point to everyone that he's still got something left in the tank - but age is not on his side.
