Luke Campbell’s brave bid to topple Vasyl Lomachenko ended in heartache as the Ukrainian retained his WBA and WBO lightweight titles and scooped the vacant WBC crown with a clinical performance.

Campbell was knocked down in the 11th round and, in the end, was grateful for the final bell as he dropped a unanimous decision by two scores of 119-108 and one of 118-109 at London’s O2 Arena.

While the judges’ scorecards were arguably a little harsh on the Hull fighter, Lomachenko underlined just why he is regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet as he took another step towards becoming the undisputed champion in the 135lb division.

After being knocked down in the 11th, it was clear that Campbell was fading and tiring.

No more so than in the final round when he was wobbling again, only to prevent himself from tasting the mat by grabbing hold of his opponent and throwing him to the mat instead.

It was a move that belonged more inside an Octagon rather than a boxing ring, but that still shouldn't take away the tremendous job Campbell did throughout the fight.

Speaking in the aftermath, it was clear that the Brit felt like the rest of the boxing universe when he was a bit disappointed with the judges' scorecards.

"I got beat by the better man, there are no excuses,” Campbell stated.

"But I think the scorecards were really rubbish - they didn't tell the story whatsoever. I thought at least I had five rounds that I won.

"They didn't tell the story of the fight whatsoever so that's a little bit disappointing.”

Whether Campbell did win five rounds or not can be debated, but. lot of boxing fans will be agreeing with Campbell in the scorecards maybe being a bit too harsh on him.
