Gareth Bale comes to Zinedine Zidane’s rescue as Real Madrid draw 2-2 against Villarreal

Gareth Bale saved Real Madrid from suffering an embarrassing defeat to Villarreal on Sunday, scoring a brace during a 2-2 draw at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Gerard Moreno opened the scoring for the hosts after 12 minutes, capitalising on a mistake from Sergio Ramos.

The striker robbed Madrid's captain of possession and fed a pass to Karl Toko Ekambi, who drove a shot at goal.

Thibaut Courtois failed to deal with it properly, knocking it back into the path of Moreno, who smashed his effort into the net.

Bale equalised for the visitors on the stroke of half-time, tapping in Dani Carvajal's cutback.

Despite being on top in the second half, Los Blancos looked far from their best and conceded again in the 75th minute.

This time, it was Moi Gomez who scored a tap in from close range.

It looked as if Madrid were heading for defeat, until Bale popped up again in the dying moments to salvage a point for Zinedine Zidane's side. Check out all the goals below.

The night ended on a sour note though as the Welshman was booked twice in the final few minutes and saw red.

It was a rollercoaster night for Real, and Zidane will be hoping he'll have new signing Eden Hazard fit after the international break.

Although the Belgian couldn't play any part on Sunday, fellow summer signing Luka Jovic did make his first La Liga start.

However, he failed to really impress on his league debut and it was Madrid's old guard who did most of the damage.

Bale got both the goals, while Karim Benzema also rattled the post.

Despite salvaging a point, Zidane will be disappointed with his team's performance once again. Whoever said La Liga will be a two-horse race between Barcelona and Madrid this season?
