Everton and Aston Villa are reportedly in battle to sign Cagliari striker Alessandro Matri.

The Italian striker has been in fine form for his Serie 'A' side this season, attracting admiring glances from a number of clubs, with Everton boss David Moyes thought to be one of the interested parties.

Short of strikers at Goodison Park, the Scottish manager has been linked with a number of forwards this month as Everton look to increase their fire-power at the club.

Aston Villa are also believed to be in the market for a striker, with Gerard Houllier keen to strengthen in the position for the remainder of the season.

The Villains have allowed John Carew to leave the club on loan for the remainder of the season, but are still searching for extra firepower to pull away from the top flight relegation zone.

Matri has a proven track record throughout his career, leading to interest from Juventus and Espanyol over a move for the 26-year-old.

With Tim Cahill still away on international duty at the Asia Cup, it's Everton who arguably need the former Milan striker more as Jermaine Beckford and Victor Anichebe struggle for form on Merseyside.
