FIFA announce three-man shortlist for Men's Player of the Year award

Shortlists for eight of ‘The Best FIFA Football Awards’ have been announced by football’s governing body.

The prizes will be handed out during a ceremony on Monday, September 23 in Milan.

Per FIFA‘s official website, ‘voting from the key voices in the football community – players, coaches, fans and media – has helped determine the finalists’ for each award.

The three players who have made the shortlist for each award are as follows:

FIFA Puskas Award:
Lionel Messi, Juan Fernando Quintero, Daniel Zsori

The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award:
Alisson, Ederson, Marc-André ter Stegen

The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper Award:
Christiane Endler, Hedvig Lindahl, Sari van Veenendaal

The Best FIFA Women’s Coach Award:
Jill Ellis, Phil Neville, Sarina Wiegman

The FIFA Fan Award:
Silvia Grecco, Netherlands fans at the Women’s World Cup, Justo Sánchez

The Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award:
Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Muaricio Pochettino

The Best FIFA Women’s Player Award:
Lucy Bronze, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe

The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award:
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil van Dijk

There are few surprises amongst the nominations, especially for the big categories.

The shortlist for FIFA’s top three men matches that of UEFA. Their award was handed out last week and it was Liverpool’s Van Dijk who scooped the prize.

In terms of the Women’s award, it’s no shock that England’s Bronze has been nominated alongside two World Cup winners, Morgan and Rapinoe.

Messi has been nominated for the Puskas award as well as the best player prize, thanks to his sensational chip from the edge of the box against Real Betis in La Liga.

His competition for the prize is River Plate’s Quintero, who netted a stunning free-kick vs Racing Club and Zsori, who scored an overhead kick for Hungarian side Debreceni VSC.

The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andros Townsend and Fabio Quagliarella failed to make the final shortlist for the Puskas award.
