t has been a tumultuous year for the beautiful game as yet more racially charged incidents continue to blight the sport we love.Football is for everyone to play and enjoy but sadly there are a very select group of people who don’t believe that.Last night, Romelu Lukaku was shamelessly and very obviously abused by Cagliari fans as he stepped up to take a penalty.

It was dreadful to see and Lukaku was clearly rattled.Thankfully, he found the back of the net and was rightly embraced by his new Inter Milan teammates as they showed unwavering support to their new hitman.

However, defender Milan Skriniar has come in for even further praise after he stood up to the opposing fans, shushed them and told them to ‘shut up’.

Speaking after the game he said:

I heard things that I think should not exist in football, so I told the Cagliari fans to shut up. But now we don’t think about it.

Well done, Milan.

Cagliari fans have become notorious for racial abuse with Blaise Matuidi, Samuel Eto’o, Moise Kean and Sulley Muntari all receiving similar treatment in the past.

Astoundingly, the powers that be continue to sit idly by and do nothing.

There really is no room for such barbaric behaviour and something has to be done.

In the end, Lukaku’s strike proved to be the winner but that will bring scant satisfaction after the abuse he was given.

It will have silenced the Cagliari faithful but you can’t help but feel it won’t be for long.

If the authorities continue to do nothing, it is only a matter of time before they have a go at someone else.
