Barclays FA Women's Super League to be broadcast overseas for first time ever

Barclays FA WSL

The FA has today announced that, for the first time in its history, the Barclays FA Women's Super League (FA WSL) will be broadcast overseas.

The announcement comes following a new three-year media rights deal with Scandinavian broadcaster NENT and Sky Mexico that will provide FA WSL access to viewers across Mexico, Dominican Republic, Central America, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Coverage will start this weekend as the 2019/20 FA WSL season gets underway.

Speaking about the new deal, Tom Gracey, The FA’s Senior Broadcast Manager, said: "We’re delighted that the strength of The Barclays FA Women’s Super League is being recognised globally, these two deals are a sign of the global strength and growing commercial prospects of the league."

The six-figure revenue generated from the deal is set to further help the game as it will be reinvested into the broadcasting of women's football, with services such as The FA Player app benefiting. The new live streaming platform also launched today and will provide free unprecedented global access to over 150 domestic women's football fixtures throughout the upcoming 19/20 season.

The FA Player will also feature match highlights from the Lionesses, the Women’s FA Cup and the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, alongside regularly updated features.

Tom Gracey added, "It is particularly pleasing that revenue will be targeted at the development of The FA Player. Through this reinvestment, our aim is to help improve the experience for viewers around the world and strengthen the brands of our competitions, clubs, and players in order to drive forward the commercialisation of women’s football and create a new fan-base globally."

The 19/20 Barclays FA Women's Super League season kicks off this weekend and GiveMeSportWomen will be reporting live from Stamford Bridge on Sunday 8 September for Chelsea Women v Tottenham Women.
